Word Play

For at least a couple of months, Myla has been in the fascinating process of developing speech. She now knows literally hundreds of words, and I never cease to be amazed when she pulls a new one out (hummus? sunshine? heavy? push-up? gross?).

Some of the best moments, though, come from her missteps. Here are a few words she says that aren't quite right--see if you can guess what they mean:

A. Peech-a-poo
B. Che-pup
C. Pie-low
D. Nogrrr

Answers: A. Peekaboo, B. Ketchup, C. Pillow, D. Yogurt

And then there are the ones that are nothing like the word they represent, but Matthew and I have managed to decipher her foreign language:
A. Negaw
B. Batch-a-bee
C. Ssssssss
D. Sook
E. Dobby

Answers: A. Grandma (Kathy), B. Banana, C. Snowman, D. Spoon or fork, we're not sure. E. Doughnut.

Finally, it's fun to hear the phrases she's obviously repeating. Our favorite is when she exclaims, "no no, not nice!" in a very authoritative voice. We are often accused of being "not nice" when we sit in a chair she thinks is hers, or tell her to do something she doesn't want to do, and sometimes when it's not clear what our transgression is. This is not something we say in our house, so it must be something they hear at day care a lot! The first time I heard her tell me something was "not nice!" I nearly died with laughter. I've had to be more careful about since then, since there's no doubt she means to be taken seriously when she says it.

Myla Takes a Tumble

On Tuesday, Kasey and I were called to daycare after Myla had a little accident. Before anyone reading this panics, she is perfectly fine. She was walking down a few concrete stairs to get to the playground when she fell down the last couple and pretty much just landed on her face. She doesn't have a scratch anywhere else on her body or even her hands so she must have landed full force on the right side of her head and face. Ouch. Myla has gotten very good at going up and down stairs and it sounds like she may have gotten a little cocky as she pulled her hand away from her teacher and tried to go on her own.

Myla had a pretty wide gash above her right eye that clearly required stitches so with nothing better to do on a Tuesday afternoon the entire family ventured to the St. Joseph Hospital ER! This week has been really busy and rough for Kasey and I so why not add one more thing! Now, I have been to the ER several times so it wasn't that big of a deal for me. On the other hand, Kasey, in her 31 years had never been to the ER. Hard to imagine, but I guess she just didn't play hard enough as a little kid! Or maybe she was just a better walker than our daughter. So not only did we have to try to keep Myla's emotions in check during the ordeal, but I also had to keep an eye on Kasey as she kept touching all the shiny instruments and asking "what's that?"

I'll save you all the long details, but suffice to say that Kasey and I had another first lesson as parents as we had to watch our helpless and confused daughter get stitched up by the doctor. I think Myla may have handled it better than us as she bounced back like a champ and was her usual bubbly self as long as the doctor and nurse weren't anywhere near her. The silver lining was that we got to take Myla for ice cream on the way home and that helped her quickly forget about the entire thing. I can remember my parents buying me a little toy or giving me a special treat when I wasn't feeling well so it was fun to do that for our daughter. Amazing what a little peach ice cream from Ritter's will do to help make you feel better!

An of course, I took several pictures to capture the whole experience. Enjoy!

Myla has a "sticker" on her head and poses for the camera. She was in decent spirits at this point.

The little smock with tigers on it was cracking us up. Myla loved it. I very seriously considered taking it home with us but decided against it.

This was right after the nurse put the numbing gel on her wound but before the stitches were put in. It was either that or shots. We decided to wait the 30 minutes for the numbing gel to kick in. Myla didn't like it so much. We couldn't stop laughing at the bandage on her head.

You can see how upset Myla was at this point. I think we know who her favorite Cat is!

Easter Slide Show

Here are pictures from Easter, which we celebrated with Kelly, David, Lofton, Nana, and Pop in Nashville. Be forewarned: most of these pictures are of Myla looking adorable in her Easter dress and picking up eggs. Not a lot of variety, but the cute factor is super-high.

Here's a preview:

Love that Lofton!

Here are a few shots from our visit to Nashville to see Kelly, David, and their new baby Lofton. We had a great time, and Myla was really interested in the baby. For more pictures of Lofton and the Fishes, visit www.kdfish.blogspot.com!

Oh, brother!

That's right--the ultrasound this morning revealed a happy and healthy baby BOY! So M.J. will be having a little brother in a few months! We are thrilled with the news (though we would have been either way, of course). Mostly it's just exciting because it makes this more real for me. We actually are having another baby, and it's a boy!

I'll try to scan the ultrasound pics soon so you can get your first look at the little guy. In the meantime, enjoy the temporary new background color in honor of the news.
